Metropolitan Melbourne

Usage Instructions

Main Screen

This is the main screen. From here you may access the other parts of the application.

Favourites

The Favourites screen allows you to save stations for quick access later. It's a good idea to save commonly used stations here, so you have quick access at your fingertips whenever you need it. Initially, you won't have any favourites. You can add some by selecting "Add Station" from the menu.

After you have added some favourites, selecting any one of the stations from your Favourites list will take you to the Next Leaving screen, allowing you to see the next scheduled departures from that station.

Timetables

The Timetables screen allows you to view all scheduled departures from a particular train station, on a particular day and in a particular direction. When you first select the Timetables screen, it will lead you through a series of prompts to select a line, a station, and a direction. Once you have done that, you will be presented with a list of all departures from the station you have selected.

The numbers to the left represent the time remaining before the train departs. The time in the middle is the time of departure from the station.

If you want more information about a particular train service, you can select it and you'll be taken to the Service Details screen. For example, you might want to know when the 7:33AM Caulfield will arrive at Flinders Street. You can do that by tapping the item labelled as 7:33AM, which will take you to the Service Details screen, and from there you can view the time that particular train will arrive at each station.

Next Leaving

The Next Leaving screen displays the next scheduled departures from a particular station. This is especially useful if you are already at the station or are about to leave for the station, and want to know which train you'll be catching.

Similar to the Timetables screen, the Next Leaving screen will ask you to pick a line and a station. It will then display to you the next few scheduled departures from a station.

By default only the next few departures are displayed. If you want more, you can simply tap the item labelled "More...", which will bring up the next few scheduled departures as well.

Like the Timetables screen, you can select any time to view the service details - i.e. the arrival times of that particular train at every station.

Service Details

The Service Details screen shows you the arrival times of a particular train at every station it stops at.

The 7:41AM departing from Caulfield towards Flinders Street, for example, arrives at South Yarra at 7:48AM and Melbourne Central at 7:57AM.

You can reach the Service Details screen by first going through the Next Leaving screen or Timetables screen, and tapping on any departure time listed.

Journey Planner

The Journey Planner can automatically calculate the fastest route between two stations. This is useful if getting from one station to another requires changing trains at a station, or if you aren't familiar with the layout of the train network.

To use the Journey Planner, you need to select a departure station (under "From"). You can either select the station from a list or you can select it from your Favourites. Then you need to select an arrival station (under "To"). Once you've done that, you need to select a departure time. Tapping on "Departing Now" will automatically fill that section in with the current time, or you can select "Select Time" and enter the time yourself.

Once you have done all that, the "Plan Journey!" button at the bottom will become enabled. Tapping on it will cause the Journey Planner to calculate an optimal route. The Journey Planner will try to return the fastest route between your two selected stations which departs later, but never earlier, than your selected time.
